Today we (Harrison) took a bazillon pictures of red pandas!

Today we (Harrison) took a bazillion pictures of red pandas! We woke this morning and decided we would try to go to the Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa. Before we left Seattle I talked to Ayano san who mentioned that it was a very famous zoo in Japan, and If we were up in Hokkaido, we should try to go. So this morning I looked online and found a train, bus and zoo entrance ticket combo we could buy at Sapporo station.

To Sapporo Station

The walk to Sapporo station took longer than we thought, and we ended up barely making the 10am train to Asahiyama. Once we got to the station we got on a bus to the zoo. It was pretty crowded so we ended up standing the whole way. After maybe 40 minutes we finally made it to Asahiyama Zoo!

Asahiyama Zoo!!
Once inside we looked at the map and decided what exhibit to see first. Harrison was really excited about the red pandas. However they were in the middle of the zoo, so we started at the penguins.

King penguins!

Underwater penguin tunnel

After the penguins we walked to the Fierce Animal House!

Then we finally arrived at the red panda area! Harrison saw them and freaked out while I switched out the lens on my camera for my telephoto lens. Harrison then grabbed my camera and proceeded to take pictures of the red pandas.

After about 10-20 minutes (who knows...) we proceeded onto the other exhibits in the zoo.

Snowy Owls!
Wolves!
Deer!

Japanese Crane

More owls
Japanese Macaque!

After we walked around for a bit longer, we ended up at the red panda exhibit again.

After the 2nd time at the red panda exhibit it was time for the penguin walk! We lined up and waited for the penguins to show up!

After that we headed back to the train station. This time on the bus we were able to sit down, but the bus was packed! We made it back to the station and caught the 4:30pm train back to Sapporo.

Once we returned we were hungry so we decided to eat dinner at a restaurant, in the department store at the station. We choose a Japanese style restaurant and treated ourselves to a hakushu highball and set meal.

The restaurant was called Jinbei
kampai!
Jinbei Set
Uni and ikura donburi
misoshiru

crab tempura...which I originally thought was shrimp...
soba!
amaebi sashimi!
The food was so good! We ate it all and left happy. However on the walk home we decided we wanted to grab a snack. Harrison suggested Mcdonalds. Now if you've read my travel blog before, you know that I love going to American restaurants in other countries. They have a bunch of different things that you can't get in the states. We walked into Mcdonalds and as I was reading the menu one thing jumped out at me. Shogayaki or ginger pork burger! We both got a shogayaki burger meal with a melon fanta (the best flavor of fanta in my opinion)

After we finished, we walked back to our hotel and decided to call it a night. Now I'm sorting through my photos and Harrison is uploading his videos and photos to our shared album. Not sure what our plans for tomorrow are, but we are fully enjoying ourselves here in Hokkaido and can't wait to continue our travels!

Daily Step Count: 17,446
Total Step Count: 78,623

Jason's Fall Count: 1
Harrison's Fall Count: 0

We are adding another new metric to measure on the blog! Harrison loves kaarage, like a lot. So we've decided to track how many times he eats it while we are here in Japan. Note that we have only been here for 4 days...

Harrison's Kaarage Count: 4
